Resolution is not accuracy, and calibration is not merely a sticker. A credible spring test depends on the complete measurement chain: load sensor, position system, frame, fixtures, software and method.

Force and position are separate systems

The load cell measures force while an encoder or other position system measures machine movement. Each has its own range, resolution, calibration and uncertainty. A high-resolution display cannot compensate for an unsuitable load-cell range or an unverified position scale.

Traceability

Traceability connects a result through an unbroken chain of calibrations to recognised references, with stated uncertainties at each stage. Keep calibration certificates, equipment identity, dates and the configuration used for the test available for review.

Machine and fixture compliance

As force rises, the frame, load cell and fixtures can deflect. If the test uses crosshead movement as the spring displacement, that compliance may be included in the reading. The effect grows with force and depends on the machine and tooling. Characterise it and apply only a validated compensation method where required.

Use the appropriate range

A measurement can be inside the machine capacity yet outside the range where the required uncertainty is achieved. Choose the load cell and configuration around the actual test forces, not only the maximum possible force.

Software integrity

Calibration factors should be applied once at a controlled boundary. Unit conversion, recipe scaling, raw storage and report calculations must agree. A software update should preserve version identity and provide a checksum so the installed package can be verified.

A practical review checklist

  • Are force and position calibrations current for the intended range?
  • Is the fixture configuration identified and aligned?
  • Has frame or fixture compliance been considered?
  • Are environmental and warm-up requirements satisfied?
  • Does the report state units, method, recipe and software version?
